Historical Note

The Office of Business Administration (OBA) oversaw all financial aspects of the operations of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM) from the mid 1930s until 1980. Clinton N. Hunt (CNH), long-time associate of the Guggenheim Brothers and 1917 New York University School of Commerce graduate, served as the first Business Administrator through the tenure of two SRGM directors: Hilla Rebay and James Johnson Sweeney (JJS). He worked under the supervision of Albert E. Thiele, Vice-President and Trustee of Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. CNH was succeeded by Glenn H. Easton, Jr. (GHE) in 1959. GHE oversaw the OBA from 1959-1972, and his tenure coincided with the directorship of both JJS and Thomas M. Messer (TMM). Upon GHE's departure from the museum, the OBA came under the direction of the SRGM's Deputy Director, Henry Berg (HB). The newly created position of Deputy Director incorporated the role of Business Administrator with additional managerial responsibilities. Appointed to this position by TMM in 1973, HB supervised the day-to-day operations of the museum in addition to participating in long-range planning with senior staff and trustees. HB was heavily involved with SRGM legal matters during his time as Deputy Director and in 1980 he became a legal consultant to the SRGM. Prior to coming to the SRGM, HB was Assistant Director of the Yale Center for British Art and received a J.D. from Yale University and an M.A. in Art History from Harvard University.
