The Peggy Guggenheim Collection (PGC) is a museum of twentieth-century art, located in Venice and housed in the former home of Peggy Guggenheim (PG). It is owned and operated by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Showcased in the PGC is PG's personal collection of art, representing artistic movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism. The PGC includes work by notable artists such as Picasso, Dali, Calder, Duchamp, Rothko, Pollock, and Giacometti.

The records include: correspondence; memoranda; press releases; press clippings; finance and budget documents; advisory board meeting agenda and minutes; donor cultivation; donation and grant records; special events coordination; and photographs and slides of the PGC interior and exterior, special events, and artwork.

Historical Note

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection (PGC) is a museum of twentieth-century art, located in Venice and housed in the former home of Peggy Guggenheim (PG). It is owned and operated by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation (SRGF). In 1948, PG, niece of Solomon R. Guggenheim, purchased the eighteenth-century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal in Venice. In 1949, PG held a sculpture exhibition in the garden of the Palazzo and in 1951 she decided to open the Palazzo and her personal art collection to the public. PG was first invited by Thomas Messer, Director of SRGF, to show her collection at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1969. After a successful exhibition, PG decided that in the event of her death, her collection would be donated to the SRGF. Upon her death on December 23, 1979, the Palazzo and the collection became the property of the SRGF. The property was completely restored and remains in the original location in Venice. The PGC showcases PG's personal collection of art, representing artistic movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism. The collection includes work by notable artists such as Picasso, Dali, Calder, Duchamp, Rothko, Pollock, and Giacometti.

Scope and Content Note

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection (PGC) records span the years circa 1930s-1992 (bulk 1980-1986) and contain information pertaining to PGC administration, development, and exhibitions. In addition to containing general memoranda, press clippings and press releases, the collection also documents the relationship between the PGC and its donors, as well as ties between the PGC and other organizations and important members of the Venice community. These relationships are highlighted in memoranda, correspondence and formal invitations related to exhibition openings and special events, as well as in correspondence to donors and donation and grant records. Restricted folders contain financial and donor information. Items of interest include press clippings about PG's death, and the subsequent transfer of the PGC to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. A significant number of photographs and slides of exterior and interior views of the PGC Palazzo are also present here. The collection is organized into 2 series: 1. Administration; 2. Exhibitions and Objects.

Summary: Series 1. Administration contains records relating to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection's (PGC) public affairs, development, special events, student internships and advisory board. The records include fundraising and development information such as: donor lists; cultivation and correspondence; donation and grant records; and special event coordination. Memoranda and correspondence surrounding important visitors to the PGC, such as the President of Italy and the Mayor of Venice, are also included. The collection also contains photographs and slides of the PGC Palazzo interior and exterior. General folders are organized chronologically by year and consist of: memoranda; press clippings; and press releases related to PGC events and activities, Peggy Guggenheim's death, the transfer of the PGC to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the renovation of the Palazzo. Advisory Board, Development, and Finance folders are restricted.

Exhibition information includes memoranda; correspondence; press releases; and brochures pertaining to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection exhibitions: "Guggenheim: Venezia-New York" (1982) (marking the first time work from both the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection had been displayed together); "Six Modern Masters" (1985); and "La Tauromaquia" (1985). Also included are press clippings on the Venice Biennale; details on an event for "Italian Art Now" (1982); a proposal for an exhibition titled "With Prendergast in Italy;" and photographs of artwork from the permanent collection.
