Historical Note

Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin opened on November 7, 1997 as a partnership between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Deutsche Bank. Designed by American architect Richard Gluckman, the space was established to organize and present exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The exhibition space hosted three to four exhibitions each year, many of which showcased a work specially commissioned by an artist. The exhibition program and the day-to-day management of the museum was the joint responsibility of the two partners. The museum closed in early 2013. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation (SRGF), founded in 1937, is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, architecture, and other manifestations of modern and contemporary visual culture; collecting, preserving and researching art objects; and making them accessible to scholars and an increasingly diverse audience through its network of museums, programs, educational initiatives, and publications. The SRGF retains ownership of three museums: the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum in Las Vegas (closed 2008). It provides curatorial direction and management services to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao with which it shares collections and programs. The Deutsche Bank, founded in 1870, considers cultural commitment to be an essential part of its commercial and social responsibility. Since 1979, this commitment has led to the largest collection of artworks owned by a single company in the world, one that today comprises more than 50,000 works. The main emphasis of the collection is on contemporary works on paper. In 1980 the Deutsche Bank began the exhibition series "Artist of the Business Year." This series continues to the present day (2008). Each successive show is dedicated to a single artist and tours museums and art societies throughout Europe. Alongside this exhibition series, the Deutsche Bank organizes additional exhibitions largely devoted to modern and contemporary art.
