Abstract:
The collection on Dada was assembled by the Guggenheim library staff circa the 1970s for use as a research tool. In February of 1916, Hugo Ball founded a literary cabaret/nightclub in a bar called the Meierei in Zurich, Switzerland. Ball called his gathering the Cabaret Voltaire, which almost immediately attracted a group of artists, writers, musicians, and thinkers who formed the Dada movement. In the Dada Manifesto Tristan Zara described Dada as "…a protest with the fists of its whole being engaged in destructive action…." The group was devoted, not only to performances and exhibitions, but to publication of poems, stories, essays, and songs. Around the same time, groups of artists, writers, and musicians in other countries and cities, including New York, had similar ideas and an international artistic movement was born.
Abstract:
The collection on Dada documents a selection of the history of Dada from 1916 until 1976. This collection contains exhibition invitations, fliers, posters, performance programs, newspaper and magazine clippings, and reproductions of Dada publications. This small yet comprehensive collection highlights events in New York, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Munich, Paris, Geneva, and Zurich between 1966 and 1976. The subjects of the newspaper and magazine clippings center on Dada and Neo-Dada. An original copy of Paul Dermée's Dada magazine Z1 is also included in the collection.
