Lord Castle Stewart (LCS), born in 1889, married Solomon R. Guggenheim's daughter, Eleanor Guggenheim, in 1920. LCS served as a member of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Advisory Committee and also as chief foundation trustee (head of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Board of Trustees) in 1949.

Historical Note

Lord Castle Stewart (LCS), born in 1889, was a direct descendent of the royal house of Scotland. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and served in Parliament in the early 1930s. In December 1920, LCS married Solomon R. Guggenheim's (SRG) daughter, Eleanor Guggenheim, and together they had four sons. LCS went on to become a member of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's Advisory Committee and in 1949, after SRG's death, became the Chief Foundation Trustee (head of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Board of Trustees). LCS turned over full control of the Foundation and the museum construction project to Harry F. Guggenheim in 1952.

Scope and Content Note

The Lord Castle Stewart correspondence spans the years 1945-1960 (bulk 1950-1954) and contains correspondence, both outgoing and incoming, between Lord Castle Stewart and Hilla Rebay, Harry F. Guggenheim (HFG), Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW), Albert E. Thiele, Clinton Hunt and James Johnson Sweeney (JJS). Items of interest attached to the correspondence include newspaper clippings, magazine clippings, memoranda, and press releases. The correspondence primarily pertains to: naming of JJS as new Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum director; establishment of the Guggenheim International Awards and corresponding Paris dinner; the Dockum project; building of the new museum; naming of the new museum; leadership of the museum; damage to the museum model; and the Bauer Trust. Highlights of the collection include correspondence containing the museum's bylaws and charter, located in the folder "Visit to New York," and a statement made by HFG on the death of FLW, located in the HFG folder.
